Louise Belcourt

Can you briefly describe what you do?

I am a painter.

What drives you to make work?

The need to feel centered and the need to find joy.

Can you tell me something of your day-to-day working practices?

In the studio by 10 am, lunch at 2 ish, leave at 6pm.  Six days a week, minimum.

How long have you been working in that way?

A long time. 12 years ago I had a part time job on the weekends but otherwise it was 5 days like that.

Which artists have had the greatest affect on your work?

Phillip Guston, Matisse, Van Gogh.

What, outside visual art, informs your practice?

Gardening, garden building, mornings and long walks.

How would you like people to engage with your work?

I want them to feel desire and love looking at them.  It would be nice to think that they would want to touch them too.

Have you seen anything recently that has made an impression?

Greens that are so far away they appear blue. My black dog running thru fog.

Do you have anything exciting on the horizon?

Fall is coming.
